NAMIBIAN FOOD
Food must be filling, not always necessarily tasty. North and South has different food traditions, depending on the agriculture and local conditions for farming. A commonality is however that the food must be healthy, which means loads of ENERGY within!
And meat. Meat, meat, meat. Having a vegetarian dinner with Shaun for example, who's from Namibia, creates confusion; "Where the hell is the FOOD?"
A nice favorite so far are the "Fat kuchen". Doesn't look very much for the world, but it's good. Like a bun dripping in oil. Only sold at locals market for one dollar or so! (top-picture).
In the south, I was invited to Salane's family to have the traditional Donky Meat (mid-picture). It was good! Salty and meaty. And of course - the plate full of porridge!
When we came with the bus up to the North, Frans was nagging at me when we saw all the hundreds of cute donkies walking next to the road. "You had those for dinner last week! You should feel ashame.." And yes, I felt a bit guilty. So for the rest of the week I tried to keep myself to vegetables which was a great challenge in this meat influenced country, but it worked out in the end. Ruth (left, the other intern from Botswana) and Elaine (right) enjoys meat and the traditional northern porridge Mahango in the every day lunch place in the open market.
